On News

1                                                                                                 2
News from a foreign country came,                                           As if the tidings were the things,

As if my treasure and my wealth lay there:                               My very joys themselves, my foreign treasure,
So much it did my heart enflame                                            Or else did bear them on their wings;
’Twas wont to call my soul into mine ear!                     With so much joy they came, with so much pleasure.
Which thither went to meet                                                       My sould stood at the gate
The approaching sweet:                                                                      To recreate
And on the threshold stood,                                                     Itself with bliss: and to
To entertain the unknown good.                                          Be pleased with speed. A fuller view
It hovered there,                                                                             It fain would take
As if ’twould leave mine ear,                                                      Yet journeys back would make
And was so eager to embrace.                                                  Unto my heart: as if ’twould fain
The joyful tidings as they came,                                                  Go out to meet, yet stay within
’Twould almost leave its dwelling place,                                                       To fit a place, to entertain,
To entertain the same.                                                           And bring the tidings in.

What sacred instict did inspire                                                    But little did the Infant dream

My soul in childhood with a hope so strong?                              That all the treasures of the world were by:
What secret force moved my desire,                                           And that himself was so the cream
To expect my joys beyond the seas, so young?                          And crown of all, which round about did lie:
Felicity I knew                                                                              Yet thus it was. The gem,
Was out of view:                                                                                                  The diadem,
And being here alone,                                                                         The ring enclosing all
I saw that happiness was gone                                                     That stood upon this earthly ball;
From me! For this                                                                              The heavenly eye,
I thirsted absent bliss,                                                                     Much wider than the sky,
And thought that sure beyond the seas,                                           Wherein they all included were
Or else in something near at hand                                               The glorious soul that was the king
I knew not yet, (since nought did please                                          Made to possess them, did appear
I knew,) my bliss did stand.                                                                  A small and little thing!
